Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay thinks the best is yet to come from him in his career because he developed late.

Having ascended through Manchester United’s youth academy and making his debut in 2017, McTominay’s journey to prominence was marked by a slower development curve. Last season, he registered his lowest number of Premier League starts in the past four years, and it appears that he will once again assume a reduced role within the squad this season.

During the summer, there were considerations of McTominay’s potential sale under the management of Erik ten Hag. Under Ten Hag’s leadership, McTominay has not been a regular starter. However, his standout performances for the Scottish national team have not gone unnoticed, as he is currently the joint top goalscorer in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, boasting an impressive six-goal tally.

In the Scotland setup, McTominay occupies a more advanced midfield position, and his contributions have spurred improvement within Steve Clarke’s squad.

On a personal level, McTominay remains confident that his career trajectory is still on an upward trajectory. Speaking to the club’s media, he reflected on his late blooming development, saying: “My dad was brilliant because he would always say, ‘Just take your time, son.’ ‘You’re going to grow and you’re going to get bigger,’ because he knows, doesn’t he? As a kid, you don’t know that.”

He continued: “And you always think: I’m always the latest one. But then, when I did grow, when I was 17 or 18, I was sat next to him and I was above him. I was like: ‘What’s going on here? Four years ago, you were saying to me not to worry, and now look.'”

McTominay then pointed out: “I’d be thinking to myself: I’m bigger than my dad, and he’s 6ft 2in. So it’s crazy in that respect. The way I see it now is that I grew maybe four years after everyone else, so my peak years are going to be four years later, too.”

He concluded optimistically: “So I’m 26 now, and my body age is technically like a 22-year-old. When I’m 30, I might feel like a 26-year-old. I might retire at 38 or 40.”

Scott McTominay’s contract with Manchester United extends until 2025, with the option for an additional year.
