Following the confirmation of his departure from Manchester United this summer, the 21-year-old striker completed a season-long move to Spain last Thursday. Then, on Tuesday, he joined his newly-acquired teammates for a public training session at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez stadium.
The enthusiasm from the club’s fans, which erupted upon the announcement of his signing last week, persisted as the club shared social media images and videos. In one video, the former England international made his entrance from the tunnel to a boisterous round of applause. Greenwood also made a point of exchanging high-fives with young fans, a heartwarming moment captured in the footage and captioned with the words, “We love you, @masongreenwood.”
The player himself also addressed the public through Getafe’s official Twitter account, marking his first public comments since completing his move. In a video released by the club, he expressed, “Hi Getafe fans, it’s Mason here. I’m incredibly thrilled to be here, and I’m eagerly looking forward to getting started.”
Back in July, Mason Greenwood confirmed via Instagram that his girlfriend had welcomed their first child. He posted a heartwarming picture of the couple holding their newborn’s hand, with the caption featuring the date ‘11.07.23’.
More recently, his partner took to Instagram to share a photo of a Getafe shirt and shorts, specially prepared for their baby. The miniature kit bears the word ‘Daddy’ on the back along with the number 12, mirroring the squad number assigned to Greenwood.
While Mason Greenwood was not signed in time to feature in the club’s narrow 2-1 loss to Real Madrid last Saturday, there is anticipation that he might make his debut in the upcoming match against Osasuna this Sunday. This is despite ongoing criticism of the club from a Spanish domestic abuse charity.
Greenwood’s absence from professional football dates back to January 2021 when he faced legal troubles, including an arrest and charges related to attempted rape, assault causing bodily harm, and allegations of controlling and coercive behavior. All these charges were subsequently dropped in February of the current year, with the Crown Prosecution Service citing the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new evidence.
On Saturday, Ana Bella Estévez, representing the Ana Bella Foundation, based in Madrid, expressed strong criticism towards Getafe for their decision to sign Mason Greenwood. She stated, “The club is setting a terrible example. Getafe executives should never have hired Mason Greenwood and should immediately overturn their decision. If you’re a public-facing organization like Getafe, there is no excuse for remaining neutral on the issue of violence against women. You must take moral responsibility.”
