Mason Greenwood Scores First Goal for Getafe Following Loan Move from Manchester United

Mason Greenwood has opened his goal-scoring account for Getafe since joining the Spanish club on loan from Manchester United.

The 22-year-old striker netted his team’s second goal in a La Liga match against Celta Vigo, giving them a 2-1 lead in the 33rd minute. Mason Greenwood’s goal came shortly after Borja Mayoral had opened the scoring for Getafe just two minutes into the match, with Jonathan Bamba equalizing for Celta Vigo.

Greenwood’s goal proved crucial as Getafe had been reduced to 10 men just moments earlier when Domingos Duarte was sent off. Jorgen Strand Larsen later leveled the score for the hosts just before halftime.

Greenwood is currently on loan at Getafe until the end of the season. His loan move came after Manchester United decided that he could no longer continue his career at Old Trafford. Greenwood had faced legal issues, including arrest in October the previous year, and was subsequently charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

While the charges were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service, Manchester United conducted an internal investigation and concluded that it would be in the best interest of all parties for Greenwood to leave the club. There was significant backlash and controversy surrounding the prospect of Greenwood returning to the United lineup, which played a role in the club’s decision.

A statement released by Manchester United in August stated, “Manchester United has concluded its internal investigation into the allegations made against Mason Greenwood. Our process commenced in February 2023, following all charges against Mason being dropped.

“Throughout, we have taken into account the wishes, rights, and perspective of the alleged victim along with the club’s standards and values, and sought to collate as much information and context as possible.

“This has required us to proceed with sensitivity and care to obtain evidence not in the public domain, including from those with direct knowledge of the case.

“Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offenses in respect of which he was originally charged. That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for.

“All those involved, including Mason, recognize the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”

Greenwood’s time at Getafe has garnered mixed reactions. He has made five appearances for the club, with his recent goal being his first since January 2022. Prior to his loan move to Getafe, Greenwood had not played for over 18 months.
