Liverpool Football Club has issued a scathing statement denouncing the “unacceptable” failures of the Video Assistant Referee ( VAR ) system following their Premier League defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. The statement also revealed that the club is exploring additional options to address the issue.
The controversy emerged when Liverpool’s Luis Diaz had a goal disallowed due to an offside decision made by VAR during the match against Tottenham. It later came to light that VAR had erred in disallowing the goal, a revelation acknowledged by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). The officials involved in the VAR decision have since been sidelined for upcoming matches.

In addition to the VAR controversy, Liverpool endured a challenging match, finishing with nine players after Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota received red cards in separate incidents, both of which were reviewed by VAR.
Despite these setbacks, Liverpool managed to level the score at one point, thanks to Cody Gakpo’s goal, but ultimately conceded a late own goal by Joel Matip, resulting in a 2-1 defeat.
