Jurgen Klopp urged to use Newcastle’s FFP issues to help Liverpool in transfer raid

Jurgen Klopp could look to land Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes if they follow the advice of club legend John Aldridge, who wants the Reds to take advantage of the Magpies’ FFP problems

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been told to try and raid Newcastle for Bruno Guimaraes amid reports the Magpies are struggling with Financial Fair Play issues.

The claim comes just days after Newcastle‘s CEO Darren Eales revealed that if the club are to comply with FFP rulings, they may have to sell a number of stars in the current and next window. As a result, this confession has sparked a plethora of rumours that a fire sale is imminent at St. James’ Park, with some of the most talented players in the league up for grabs on the cheap.

With that in mind, Liverpool legend John Aldrige has encouraged Klopp to take advantage of Newcastle’s problem to try and land the signature of Guimaraes, who is believed to boast a release clause in his Magpies contract worth around £100million.

Aldridge, while speaking to Liverpool Echo, heaped praise on the Brazilian midfielder and admitted he is someone who would raise the level at Anfield. He claimed: “Bruno Guimaraes is a good player too, a really good player.

“He plays in a position where we need to improve, in my opinion. Even with Endo in the team, who has really done well. But when you’re looking at perfection, you’ve got to have two players for every position.

“It’s a position we’ve struggled with for some time. Endo’s started to come good in it, he’s got used to the Premier League. But when very good players become available, all the top teams are looking at them and you’ve got to be in the mix. Whether Liverpool are in the mix, we’ll have to wait and see.

“But he’s a really good player for Newcastle. It’s quite refreshing to see, Newcastle have got all this money but we can actually see FFP hopefully, hopefully, starting to come into effect.”

Guimaraes is widely viewed as one of the best in his position around, but Liverpool’s best bet may be to lean into Newcastle’s need to sell and try to pry the midfielder away for less than his eye-watering release clause.

The 26-year-old’s manager, Eddie Howe, recently bemoaned the FFP situation the club find themselves in and seemed to suggest Newcastle are currently in a position where they must sell before they buy.

He explained: “In an ideal world, given the freedom to act we would have brought players in already. But we’re not in that situation – as Darren [Eales] alluded to on Thursday, Financial Fair Play is a problem for us, and we’re having to navigate round that.

“That’s the position we’re in. When does it become a problem? It’s already one, but we’re trying to manage through it.”
