In an unexpected revelation, Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai recently shared the story behind one of his tattoos, leaving his teammate Diogo Jota pleasantly surprised. The tattoo in question bears a quote from Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and holds deep personal significance for the Hungarian midfielder.
Upon joining Liverpool from RB Leipzig in July, Szoboszlai inherited the iconic No.8 jersey previously worn by Gerrard, a choice that carried emotional weight for the young midfielder. Dominik Szoboszlai had previously donned the No.17 shirt while playing in Germany and the No.10 for the Hungarian national team, making the No.8 a novel choice for him.

In an interview during his introduction to Liverpool, Szoboszlai explained the connection, saying, “There’s not a special reason, but of course it’s a great number; a lot of great players have worn this number. I also have a tattoo from Steven Gerrard, from what he said – I don’t even remember when, but it was before. It was also a reason why.”
Reflecting on his childhood, Szoboszlai admitted, “When I was a child, to be honest, I didn’t watch that much football, but of course, when it was the Champions League or a big game, I was watching Liverpool, the big teams, and also the big players – and he was one of the biggest.”
Written in his native Hungarian on his left arm, the tattoo bears the message: “Talent is a blessing from God, but without incredible will and humility, it is worthless.”

The revelation about the tattoo occurred during a fun challenge video on Liverpool’s YouTube channel. In the video, titled ‘Hot or Not,’ Szoboszlai, alongside Jota and Joel Matip, rated various topics on a scale of favorability.
When the topic of tattoos came up, Dominik Szoboszlai placed himself firmly in the ‘hot’ category, while his two teammates leaned towards ‘not.’ Matip remarked, “I don’t mind. Everybody can do what they want, but for me personally, no.”
Curious to understand why Szoboszlai had tattoos, Jota asked, “You explain to us why you have them.”

With a smile, Szoboszlai revealed, “I actually have one from Gerrard,” pointing to the quote on his forearm. Jota, with a tone of amazement, responded, “You have one from Gerrard?” Perhaps the phrasing of Szoboszlai’s revelation momentarily misled Jota, making it seem as though Gerrard himself had administered the tattoo. Szoboszlai laughed, saying, “Yeah, this one. If you can read it, I’d give you a lot of money because it is Hungarian!”
