Manchester United’s forward, Antony, has been granted a leave of absence by the club amidst assault allegations, which he strongly denies. Antony, who last played in the defeat at Arsenal, has released a statement addressing the situation.
The allegations of assault were brought forward by his former girlfriend, Gabriela Cavallin, and subsequently, additional claims have been made against the 23-year-old by different women. Antony, the Brazil international who joined United from Ajax in 2022, firmly refutes all accusations against him.
Antony last played for Man United in their 3-1 defeat at Arsenal
Antony had been part of Manchester United’s first-team squad at the beginning of the season, with his most recent appearance being in the defeat at Arsenal during their last Premier League match. However, he was withdrawn from Brazil’s international squad prior to the club’s decision to grant him a leave of absence.
In his statement, Antony said: “I have agreed with Manchester United to take a period of absence while I address the allegations made against me. This was a mutual decision to avoid distraction to my teammates and unnecessary controversy for the club.”
He continued: “I want to reiterate my innocence of the things I have been accused of, and I will fully cooperate with the police to help them reach the truth. I look forward to returning to play as soon as possible.”
Antony was initially scheduled to return to training with United on Monday. However, it has been reported that the decision to grant him a leave of absence was reached after discussions involving club officials, manager Erik ten Hag, Antony, and his representatives.

Manchester United has also issued a statement regarding the ongoing situation. The statement begins: “Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony”. It further states: “Players who have not participated in international matches are due back in training on Monday. However, it has been agreed with Antony that he will delay his return until further notice to address the allegations.”
The club’s statement concludes with: “As a club, we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognize the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.”
Antony, who previously played under Ten Hag at Ajax, followed the manager to Old Trafford at the start of the 2022-23 season. He made 25 league appearances for United last season, scoring four goals, and has featured in all four of his club’s Premier League matches this season.
The former Sao Paulo youngster also boasts two goals from 16 senior appearances for Brazil and was part of his country’s squad for the 2022 World Cup. He played in four of Brazil’s five matches in the tournament, which ended at the quarter-final stage.
Manchester United’s season will resume on September 16, with a match against Brighton at Old Trafford. Four days later, the club will kick off their Champions League group stage campaign with a visit to Bayern Munich.
